About the AFEX Program
The Astronautics and Flight Exploration (AFEX) Academy at Merritt Island High School is a four-year program that prepares students for careers in aviation, aerospace, and engineering. AFEX blends classroom learning with real-world, hands-on experiences using tools and technology found in professional aerospace environments.
Students train using flight simulators, virtual reality space missions, drones, 3D printers, and even design and test rockets. From the very first year, students explore aerospace engineering, modeling and simulation, and space policy. Each grade level builds knowledge and technical skills while preparing students for advanced opportunities in the field.
Why Choose AFEX?
AFEX is not just about learning. It is about launching students into their futures. Students have the chance to earn industry-recognized certifications including the FAA Private Pilot Written Exam, FAA Part 107 Drone License, Autodesk Fusion 360 CAD Certification, and Autodesk AutoCAD Certification. These credentials open doors to universities, technical careers, and military or aerospace service.
Students also benefit from guest speakers, career-focused field trips, and hands-on engineering challenges. By the time they graduate, AFEX students are confident, career-ready, and fully prepared to lead in the world of aerospace.
